Weekly Opening Report: The Week of May 27, 2013

Every week, we take a look at restaurants that have opened across the country. Here’s this week’s roundup:

MXDC: In early summer, a new Mexican restaurant called MXDC will open in downtown Washington, DC, a venture in which celebrity chef Todd English is a partner. The atmosphere of the interior will be a balance between modern and rustic architecture.

Kumi: At Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Chef Akira Back will preside over Kumi, set to open this summer. The restaurant, as led by the chef, will feature a modern Japanese menu with a Korean-American twist. To match, the restaurant’s décor will be inspired by authentic Japanese architecture, with the venue, seating for up to 300 people, being anchored by a sushi bar.

The Musket Room: Based on the distinctive cuisine of New Zealand, The Musket Room opened recently in New York City’s Nolita neighborhood. Chef Matt Lambert, a native of the Oceania nation, designed the restaurant’s menu to reflect the various strains of New Zealand’s culinary traditions. The interior features the front Musket Room and the back Barrel Room, two sections of the establishment that incorporate rustic and contemporary design elements.

Old School Brooklyn: In Brooklyn, New York, Old School Brooklyn (OSB) has opened recently as a tribute to authentic, homestyle American cooking. The restaurant itself is designed as a nostalgic monument to the past, intended to evoke a Brooklyn parlor circa 1930, decorated with vintage knick-knacks and antique memorabilia.

Mariza: Chef Ian Schnoebelen has recently opened a new Italian restaurant, Mariza, in New Orleans’ upper Ninth Ward. The eatery is unique in its concentration on local seafood, featuring it in its raw and whole fish of the day. In addition, the restaurant focuses on offering a variety of moderately priced Italian wines.
