Tostitos Rolls Out New Cantina Chips and Salsas

Tostitos Rolls Out New Cantina Chips and Salsas

The new products are designed to recreate the Mexican restaurant experience

When we open up a bag of Tostitos, by this point we know what to expect. Crispy tortilla chips, not too thin, not too thick — they're the standard-bearer when it comes to scooping up some salsa. But one thought that generally doesn’t come to mind is, "Gee, these taste exactly like the chips I get at [insert favorite Mexican restaurant’s name here]!"

For that reason, Tostitos has unveiled their four newest creations: Cantina chips, which are yellower, thicker, and crunchier than their standard chip; Cantina Thin & Crispy, which are much thinner and lighter than the original; and two new sauces, Chipotle Restaurant Style and Roasted Garlic Thick and Chunky.

While these new creations still aren’t realistic representations of the fresh chips and salsa that you’ll find in a good Mexican restaurant, they’re still winners, and are a solid extension of the Tostitos brand into more nuanced fare. The crunchy, thick Cantina chips are ideal for chunkier salsas and heavier toppings (read: perfect for nachos), and although the thin ones didn't hold up so well in the bag, they had that expected Tostitos flavor while holding their own against more gourmet super-thin chips like Xochitl. The salsas were also better than expected, with real garlic flavor and chunks of tomatoes in the Roasted Garlic and a pronounced smoky spiciness coming through in the Chipotle.

While it’s a little early to do your Super Bowl shopping, it’s never too early to do Super Bowl planning. These new chips and salsas (especially the thicker varieties) would do well as part of your halftime spread.

Get Your Snack On With Tostitos Cantina-Style Chips and Salsa

Few pairings work better than crisp corn chips and fiery salsa unfortunately, this classic Mexican-restaurant starter rarely translates well to supermarket offerings. Tostitos aims to change this with its latest line of restaurant-style chips and salsa, so naturally we felt compelled to see if they could stack up to this oft-insurmountable task.

                                Tostitos Cantina Chipotle Restaurant-Style Salsa

Fans of smoky heat were smitten with this option, praising its prominent chipotle punch and perfect level of heat that tingles taste buds without lighting one's mouth on fire, making it all too easy to come back for seconds. One taster even noted that it lived up to its promise, as it reminded her of her favorite cantina's salsa. That said, it was a touch too smoky for some, so if you're not a chipotle super fan, skip the jar.

                                Tasters' average rating:

Tostitos Cantina Roasted Garlic Thick & Chunky Salsa

This roasted garlic-laced salsa left some tasters uninspired, citing a slightly too-sweet flavor and watery texture as its undoing, though most found it better than standard supermarket salsa. Those who enjoyed it touted its just-right level of punchy garlic, tanginess, and balanced saltiness. All in all, try this one for yourself: essentially, it came down to a matter of personal preference.

                                Tasters' average rating:

                                Tostitos Cantina Traditional Tortilla Chips

Our favorite of the new line, these hefty, thick yellow corn chips won fans over with help from their sturdiness (all the better for scooping up guacamole and salsa) and satisfying crunch. Detractors wished they were a hair saltier in order to punch up the corn flavor, but this became a nonissue when paired with salsa. Overall, we'd recommend you pick up a bag for your Super Bowl celebration.

                                Tasters' average rating:

Tostitos Cantina Thin & Crispy Tortilla Chips

We neither loved nor loathed this delicate offering, largely because they lived up to their name a little too well, with many tasters complaining that they lacked the necessary heft to be a solid scooping option. Others enjoyed how light and airy they were, but none were compelled to run out to the store to snap up a bag posthaste.

Tostitos Rolls Out New Cantina Chips and Salsas - Recipes

Tostitos Cantina tortilla chips are the latest addition to Frito Lay's Tostitos line. You might have seen the commercials, which position the chips as restaurant-style chips that you might find at your local Mexican eatery. I find that kinda weird, since Tostitos are already "restaurant-style" chips.

The Cantina Traditional tortilla chips are made of yellow corn and are slightly smaller than standard Tostitos.

A 12-ounce bag retails for $3.29 in my area.

I can't really say I have an image of a "cantina chip" in my mind. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles and the chips they serve can vary wildly. Some just put out packaged chips from a supplier, while others make them themselves. I prefer the latter over stuff that I can buy from a supermarket (actually one of my local, more ethnic supermarkets sold chips that they fried up daily. so good! Unfortunately, they recently closed to make way for new developments).

That being said, Tostitos Cantina chips just feel like regular Tostitos chips, but slightly smaller and made of yellow corn. The taste, texture, and thickness feel the same to me, although I didn't get a bag of original Tostitos to compare (because then I'd be eventually eating two bags of chips instead of one).

They're described as "hearty" on the bag, but they'd have to be at least twice as thick before I'd call them that. They're too salty for my liking, especially for a dipping chip. My lips started to dry out from all the salt I got used to it after a few chips though (pretty sure that's not a good thing though).

Overall, Tostitos Traditional Cantina tortilla chips don't really get me thinking "cantina" at all. Maybe Frito Lay has had different experiences with Mexican restaurants than I. They're decent enough though with a good crunch and flavor, but nothing that stands out.

What's new: Gentlemen (and ladies) prefer pie and blondes

You don't need an excuse to enjoy a slice of pie, but now you have a real one: Jan. 23 is National Pie Day, according to the American Pie Council. Apple pie is the top pie flavor (nearly one in five Americans, 19 percent, prefers apple). The second-favorite pie (13 percent) is pumpkin, followed by a Texas favorite, pecan (12 percent). Pie also beats out cake when it comes to household desserts: 29 percent of Americans favor it over cake (17 percent) or cookies (15 percent). And it's not just for dessert: 35 percent of Americans say they've had pie for breakfast.

This month marks the first anniversary of the launch of Starbucks Blonde Roast coffee, the company's response to those who don't prefer the signature dark roast. With in-store promotions and samples, it's a good time to try Blonde or the new in-store drink, Starbucks Vanilla Blonde - vanilla syrup added to the company's lightest roast. Starbucks Blonde Roast is available in grocery stores in ground and whole-bean varieties for $9.99 for a 12-ounce bag.

Our thoughts - and naturally, our tastebuds - seem to be planted in New Orleans these days. The Super Bowl and the annual Mardi Gras festivities have us craving the food and drink of the Big Easy. For those who can't get to New Orleans, the least we could do is put on a big pot of jambalaya. Or, if you're looking for more exciting Crescent City culinary inspiration, pick up a copy of "New Orleans Chef's Table" by Lorin Gaudin (Lyons Press, $24.95), featuring recipes from restaurants throughout the city. Institutions such as Commander's Palace, Galatoire's and Emeril's are represented. But Gaudin also managed to get recipes from unsung and hip new eateries, including Borgne, Cochon Butcher, Restaurant R'evolution, SoBou, Maurepas Foods, High Hat and La Divina Gelateria. The cookbook is a tasty trip to New Orleans.

                                Recipe Summary

                                • 1 (10 ounce) can chicken chunks, drained
                                • ¼ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
                                • 5 drops hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®)
                                • 12 corn tortillas

Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Combine the chicken and cheese in a bowl stir in the hot pepper sauce. Warm the tortillas one at a time in a skillet over medium heat until flexible about 10 seconds per side.

Spread about 1 heaping tablespoon of the chicken over half of the warmed tortilla. Roll tightly to form the taquito starting at the filled side of the tortilla. Place seamed side down in the baking dish. Repeat with the remaining tortillas. Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven.
