Papa John’s Stolen Camaro Was Recovered in Detroit

The 1970s Camaro that belonged to John Schnatter was stolen from a car show

This is the Camaro that John Schnatter sold back in 1983 to fund Papa John's.

The Woodward Dream Cruise car show draws crowds in Detroit to marvel at classic cars. One of the cars featured this year, a 1970s Camaro, belongs to none other than Papa John’s founder John Schnatter. The 1971 Z28 Camaro was abandoned on the west side of Detroit between two boarded-up homes, according to The Detroit News.

Ernest Webster, a lawn maintenance man, noticed the car on August 16. “I said, 'Man, that looks like that Papa John's car,'” Webster told The Detroit News. “I looked inside and it was really clean. I called my brother-in-law, who is a cop, and he told me to call 911.” Papa John’s offered a $16,000 reward to find the car.

In 1983, Schnatter sold his car for $2,800 to fund his business. He used $1,600 of that money to buy pizza equipment.

Papa John’s issued a statement about the car when it was discovered, saying, “We are thrilled that a piece of our company’s history has been recovered, and we will continue to work with authorities during their ongoing investigation.”
