New York and Philadelphia Chefs share top Honors at NYC Wine & Food Festival's Chicken Coupe

NYC Wine & Food Festival's Chicken Coupe

Whoopi Goldberg announces the winners at the New York City Wine & Food Festival Chicken Coupe.

With chicken this good they couldn't pick just one winner. Whoopi Goldberg challenged chefs to make their best fried chicken dish at the 2015 New York Food and Wine Festival's Chicken Coupe. When all the chicken was eaten and the votes were counted, the chicken sandwiches by Pies 'n Thighs (Chicken Biscuit with buttermilk-marinated fried chicken breast on a biscuit with honey butter and hot sauce) and Philadelphia's Federal Donuts (fried chicken in a potato roll with american cheese) were so good, and so equal, that nothing could break the tie.

These standout sandwiches took top honors amid formidable competition. Last year's winner Queens Comfort was on hand with Cinnamon Toast Crunch Chicken Fingers topped with Bourbon Maple Syrup. Their staff also represented respectably on the dance floor with a chicken head costume (of course). Genuine Superette + Roadside's Buttermilk-Battered Chicken Sandwich with apple celeriac slaw and sambal mayo and Root & Bone's Shrimp and Bacon-Stuffed Chicken Wings were offered unique twists on these classic dishes.

The charity event raised money to end hunger in New York City and supported Food Bank For New York City and Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign.

It’s no longer a secret that beer and food pair beautifully together. Sometimes the perfect match can be as simple as a cheeseburger with an IPA, but an increasing number of brewery restaurants across the country are stepping up their kitchen game and offering unexpected–and expectedly good–cuisine options for pairing with their craft beers.

I’ve rounded up a group of breweries for whom good food is just as much a part of their mission as good beer. Some of these brewpub all-stars cook up classic Belgian-inspired beer cuisine, some serve up dishes inspired by far-off lands like Nepal and Japan, and the country’s only Michelin-starred brewery offers fancy small plates that will have you dabbing your mouth with linen and holding your pinky out when you sip their culinary beers.

With more than 6,000 operating U.S. breweries, this list isn’t fully exhaustive. So many U.S. craft breweries and brewpubs are stepping up their food game. But whatever your preference, these 11 spots have more than enough great options to get you salivating (and planning a road trip).
