Just in time for the holidays, happy hours, and intimate, at-home celebrations, Bonefish Grill's Director of Bar Innovation Leigh Merritt has rolled out a GQ-style version of the classic Cosmo that even a dirty martini die-hard (cue Mr. Big) is sure to savor.

Notes

Instead of Stoli Cranberi, you may use your cranberry vodka preference.

  • 1 Ounce fresh lime juice/simple syrup mixture
  • 2 Ounces white cranberry juice
  • 3 red cranberries (for garnish)

Winter white cosmo

Inspired by the holidays, this winter white cosmo is a seasonal take on the classic cosmopolitan.

Simply mix citron vodka with white cranberry juice, cointreau, and a hint of fresh lime.

Traditionally you would serve these in a martini glass, but if you’re too clumsy to hold it properly (like me…) just use one of those chic stemless glasses instead. Pour over ice and no one will know the difference!

Garnish these festive tipples with sugar covered cranberries and sprigs of fragrant mint. For a party, make a big batch in advance and chill until ready to serve.

White cranberry juice is such a fun cocktail ingredient! I’ve been using it a lot in mocktail recipes these days (I’m pregnant atm, so the Moody other half, my husband Jeff, is the one taste-testing the boozy new recipes around here). White cranberry juice is crystal clear but has a lovely sweet-tart flavor, making it a really versatile ingredient in shaken cocktails.

The Cosmopolitan is a vodka cocktail from the 1980s that doesn’t get a whole lot of love. It’s often seen as a watered-down, ‘chick drink’ that sometimes contains way too much cranberry juice, or just isn’t generally well-balanced. This recipe is crisp and not too sweet, with a bold fruity flavor that seems to defy its colorless appearance. It’s just really fun to sip.

Cosmopolitans are known for their pink or reddish hue, but a white Cosmo has a totally different, and somehow much sexier vibe. This recipe uses the only white cranberry juice I’ve been able to find, a juice blend from Ocean Spray. It’s a pretty sweet cranberry juice, so I’ve kept the Cointreau to a half ounce and fortified the drink with a full two ounce pour of vodka. If you’re a gin fan, feel free to substitute with a crisp London dry, I won’t judge. Garnish this bad boy with red roses and you have a quintessential Valentine’s Day cocktail!


This Winter White Cosmo Is the Perfect Holiday Cocktail

Have you ever had a Winter White Cosmo from the Bonefish Grill? Mixed with Cointreau, white cranberry juice, and fresh lime juice, the sweet cocktail is the perfect way to kick off the winter season. Hosting a party? It can be served as a punch, too.

Winter White Cosmo

Ingredients:

½ oz mixture of fresh lime juice and simple syrup

Combine ingredients over ice in shaker tin.

Shake and strain into chilled martini glass.

Garnish with floating cranberries.

Secrets to shake it up:

To make your own cranberry vodka: place cranberries in your favorite vodka and allow it to infuse for 48-72 hours.

For a stronger flavor: substitute your favorite citron-flavored vodka.

For a sweeter flavor: use St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur in place of the Cointreau.

To serve as a punch: increase volume of all ingredients by 10. Freeze cranberries in a block of ice for a festive look and to keep the punch cold.

Do you try to make a signature cocktail for every season/holiday? Is it just us!? Lol! So we like to pick out a seasonal flavor and a signature drink base and then play around until we get a drink for the season. Then we enjoy that drink throughout the season. Sometimes tweaking it or creating garnishes for it as we go along.

Remember our Thanksgiving holiday drink this year was the Hard Cider Moscow Mules? So those were really delicious and perfect for the fall season. But now its winter and we’re thinking the apple cider flavor is behind us, so we’re moving on to the next drink.

For our winter season drink this year, we went with a simple twist on a cosmopolitan cocktail. Traditionally a cosmo is vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and lime juice. The cranberry juice will give it a bright red/pink hue, which is already festive enough. But we decided to change it by mellowing out that bright hue. Cranberry red is definitely merry and bright but we wanted a more muted color.

Have you seen the number of cranberry juice variations that Ocean Spray is making now. And have you tried their pink cranberry juice? Its pretty delicious! It is almost like a light version of regular cranberry juice, not as tart, not as sweet. Really good on its own but even better in this white winter cosmo! Its also a wonderful shade of pale pink, just the muted winter hue we were looking for too!

This white winter cosmo is just so easy to make, no fancy syrups or special alcohols needed. The main change up is switching out the regular cranberry juice with the pink cranberry juice.

Here’s what you need:

Aaandddd, news flash, there's thankfully more to winter drinks than just eggnog. You don't need to sip on that creamy concoction when there are a variety of cocktails far more appropriate for winter vibes. Think: hot teas, aromatic spices, and a healthy dose of alcohol, all of which are equally perfect for curling up next to the fireplace or avoiding the "so, are you seeing anyone?" question that will inevitably come out of your grandma's mouth. "Still no grandma. " *sips on spiced hot toddy for emotional relief*

So if you're looking to avoid the dreaded family convos or just looking to avoid going outside for a drink (it's cold, people), I'm here to help. Here, 23 of the coziest, yummiest updates to your favorite cold-weather classics that you can make at home. Infuse your own vodka, level up with mulled rosé, or, hell, put a marshmallow on top&mdashwhatever you choose, you certainly won't be stuck with the basic eggnog this year.

Dry shake 1 oz. cognac, ¾ oz. Mozart Dark Chocolate, ¾ oz. lemon, ½ oz. clove syrup, and ¾ oz egg white. Then shake with ice. Pour mixture into a large rocks glass, then pour ⅓ oz. Port on top. Garnish with a clove pierced in a dehydrated orange.

For the tea: Combine 1 three-inch piece of lemongrass and ¼ cup hibiscus whole lead tea in a small saucepan.

For the cocktail: Combine 1½ oz. Patron Silver tequila, ¼ oz. green chili liqueur, ½ oz. simple syrup, ½ oz. fresh lime juice, and 3-4 oz. hot hibiscus lemongrass tea in a mug. Garnish with a lime slice, a stalk of lemongrass, and a tea leaf.

Add 1½ oz. gin, ½ oz. ginger liqueur, ½ oz. lemon juice, dash aromatic bitters, and ¼ oz. honey syrup (2:1 parts honey to water) into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a glass with ice. Top with 3 oz Bai Bubbles Jamaica Blood Orange and garnish with thyme and an orange slice.

Combine 1 oz. Abasolo whisky, ½ oz. Montelobos Espadin mexcal, ½ oz. Pasote Anejo tequila, ¼ oz. agave syrup, 2 dashes Bitter Queens tobacco bitters, and 2 dashes Bitercube Corazón bitters in a mixing glass. Add ice. Stir. Strain over ice, a large cube is preferred but not necessary. Express lemon peel over the top and drop in the glass.

Combine 2 parts Maker's Mark, ½ part Orgeat (almond syrup,) ½ part Cointreau, ¼ part gingerbread syrup, and juice from a whole lime. Shake well and strain into rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with mint.

Spiced Pear Syrup: Combine ½ tsp. ground cinnamon, ½ tsp. ground nutmeg, ½ tsp. ground allspice, ½ cup water, and ½ cup sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once the mixture comes to a boil, remove from heat and let cool. Store in the fridge in a closed container for up to two weeks.

For the cocktail: Combine 2 oz. Arbelour 12 YO whisky, ½ oz. lemon juice, and 1 oz. spiced pear syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a glass.

Add 2 oz. Monkey 47 Gin, ¾ oz. fresh lemon juice, ¾ oz. cranberry syrup, and ice to a shaker and shake for 5 to 7 seconds. Strain over fresh ice and top with a dry-style hard pear cider. Garnish with slices of pear, a lemon wheel, or a citrus twist.

Shake or blend together 1 oz. fresh lime juice and ½ oz. organic wild honey. Pour over ice and top with Red Bull Winter Edition Plum Twist. Garnish with basil.

Mix together 2½ oz. Monkey 47 Gin, ¼ oz. autumn spice syrup (loose-leaf chai tea and sugar), and a dash of angostura bitters, and pour over ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

Combine 1½ oz. Blade and Bow Bourbon, ½ oz. Barking Irons Applejack, ¾ oz. cinnamon syrup, and a splash of apple cider with ice and shake. Pour into a rocks glass with fresh ice and garnish with a lemon wheel and cinnamon stick.

In a tin with ice, add 1½ oz. Ketel One Vodka, 1 oz. almond milk, ½ oz. Lo-Fi Gentian Amaro, ½ oz. lemon juice, ½ oz. cinnamon syrup, and 5 dashes cardamom bitters. Shake and pour into a rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with three chocolate-covered raspberries on a skewer.

Combine 1½ oz. Cointreau, 1 oz. The Botanist Gin, 1 oz. cranberry juice, and ½ oz. fresh lime juice into a cocktail shaker, then shake and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a marigold.

In a large saucepan, combine one bottle of Rosé All Day with 1 star anise, 1 stem ginger, 5 allspice berries, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 cinnamon stick, and ¼ of a grapefruit. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, strain into a jug, and serve in heatproof glasses.

Combine 2 oz. Casamigos Reposado Tequila, ½ oz. agave nectar, ¼ oz. almond liqueur, and a pinch of cinnamon into a mug. Top with 6 oz. hot chocolate mix (prepared with hot water) and garnish with 2 roasted marshmallows and a graham cracker square.

Combine 1¾ oz. bourbon, ¾ oz. pumpkin spice liqueur, ¾ oz. lemon juice, ½ oz. simple syrup, and 1 oz. pumpkin puree in a glass and stir. Garnish with whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder.

Combine 1½ oz. Casamigos Blanco Tequila, ¾ oz. white chocolate liqueur, ¼ oz. crème de menthe, 1 oz. crème, and ½ oz. fresh lime juice into a shaker. Add ice, shake, and strain into a champagne glass. Top off with whipped cream, crushed peppermint candy, and a rosemary sprig.

Pour 2 oz. Wild Roots Pear Vodka and 1 oz. St. Germain into a champagne flute. Top with a splash of champagne and a slice of pear.

To infuse the liquor, add a scoop of dried butterfly pea flowers to vodka and let sit for one hour. Then combine ¾ oz. Cointreau, 2 oz. infused vodka, ¾ oz. fresh lime juice, and ¼ oz. cranberry juice. Shake in a shaker, then strain into a coupe or martini glass. Garnish with an orange peel.

Whip together 1 oz. Overholt Rye, 1 oz. Rittenhouse Rye, ¾ oz. lime juice, ½ oz. curaçao, ¼ oz. heavy syrup, and ¼ oz. peanut &ldquoorgeat.&rdquo Pour into a double old-fashioned glass and top with a dash of Peychauds. Garnish with a lime, orchid, and peanuts.

In a copper mug of hot water, add a ginger-orange tea bag, ¾ oz. Island syrup, ½ oz. lemon juice, and a dash of angostura bitters. In another mug, add 1½ oz. Barrell Whiskey and ½ oz. Pineau de Charentes. Pour the contents of the two mugs back and forth to mix, and then pour into a snifter with cinnamon stick, orange peel, and star anise. Garnish with a dehydrated orange peel.

Combine 1½ oz. Sour Mash Straight Bourbon Whiskey and fresh-squeezed Granny Smith apple juice in a collins glass.

In a tin shaker, combine 2 oz. Casamigos Blanco Tequila, 1 oz. cranberry juice, 1 oz. fresh lime juice, ½ oz. simple syrup, and ¼ oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur. Add ice, shake, and strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with fresh cranberries and add a dill sprig over the top.

In a balloon glass, pour together 2 oz. Monkey 47 Gin, ¼ oz. fresh lemon juice, and Fever-Tree Indian tonic water. Garnish with black peppercorns, rosemary sprigs, and a twist of grapefruit.


Winter White Cosmopolitan

Combine ingredients over ice in a shaker tin. Shake and strain into chilled martini glass.

Float 3 or 4 frozen cranberries on top for garnish.

White Cosmopolitan recipe | My Showstopper Cocktail

A few weeks back I went down to London for a weekend in Knightsbridge stopping at the Mandarin Oriental, and in the evening I took a wander down to Bar Boulud underneath the hotel and I discovered one of the best cocktails I’ve ever tasted – The White Cosmopolitan. Intent on re-creating this cocktail masterpiece at home I went on the hunt for spherical ice moulds and edible flowers but failed to realise one vital fact…no-where in the UK sells White Cranberry Juice, the key ingredient for this delectable drink! So here’s my cheat white cosmopolitan recipe…

Not one to be beaten I set out to find an alternative so us Brits can enjoy the delights of the White Cosmo at home, and after a lot of mixing and inevitable taste testing (tough job, but someone has to do it) I’ve come up with my own white cosmopolitan recipe with ingredients you don’t have to ship in by the caseload from the States! If you enjoy a Classic Cosmopolitan (see my recipe for the perfect Cosmo here) then you’re going to LOVE this…a killer cocktail with it’s own ice sculpture!

Ingredients

2 shots Good Quality Vodka

1 Shot Elderflower Liquor

1 1/2 Shots White Grape Juice

How To: White Cosmopolitan recipe

  • Add your vodka, elderflower liquor, white grape juice, and water to a shaker full of ice
  • Squeeze in your lemon and shake it like a polaroid picture!
  • Strain into a chilled martini glass over your sphere of ice (see below) and serve right away

To Make Your Ice Ball

– Put a generous pinch of your edible flowers in the bottom of a spherical ice mold – Bar Boulud use pansies but I’ve gone for cornflowers which look just as pretty.

– Fill your ice mold with slightly warm water being careful not to overfill…and freeze!

– When set you’re left with a beautifully formed ball of ice with your edible flowers frozen inside!

Because your ice ball is rather large (ooooerrr mrs!) you may need to pour the rest of your White Cosmo into a little milk jug or double shot glass to enjoy as you get more room! If you’re going full showstopper and using an ice ball then simply drop it into your martini glass while you’re mixing to chill it down, alternatively just use a handful of ice and tip it out before pouring in your cocktail. This bad boy should be served super chilled so make sure not to skip these steps!

Ok ok, so without the white cranberry it resembles a Cosmopolitan as much as it does a chocolate milkshake but it’s still a serious treat for your taste buds, and if you’re a Cosmo or Elderflower fan you’re sure to love this version!

For those looking for something a bit lighter you can make your White Cosmopolitan a little lighter with the following measurements: 1 shot vodka | 1/2 shot Elderflower Liquor | (almost) half a lemon | 1 1/2 shot white grape juice | 1 1/2 shot water – Half the alcohol but still a showstopper!


White Chicken Chili

I was first introduced to White Chili years ago when we lived in the farmhouse in North Carolina. We were going away for a couple days and one of my husband’s soldiers house sat for us while we were gone. We had pets – and chickens – who needed caring for and we couldn’t take them with us to where we were going. We offered to pay her for house sitting, but instead, she asked for me to make her a pot of “White Chili” as payment. Back then I had never even heard of it and had to search online for a recipe. I don’t remember what recipe I made back then, but this is the version I came up with since.

To begin, dice an onion and mince three cloves of garlic. Set those aside for a moment.

Dice 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts into about 3/4 inch pieces.

In your Dutch oven, heat a tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil over medium heat. Toss in the chicken and cook until it is opaque.

When it is opaque, scoop the chicken out with a slotted spoon and set it aside in a dish.

Toss your onion & garlic in the pot into the drippings and cook until tender and lightly golden.

While those are cooking, dice up a jalapeno pepper. I just used a few slices of jarred peppers, but you can use a fresh one if you like.

When your onion and garlic are golden, reduce your heat to low and sprinkle in 3 tablespoons of flour, stir to coat.

Add in 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, a teaspoon of oregano and 2 teaspoons of cumin. Stir that into the onions.

Pour in a quart of chicken broth.

Add 4 ounces of chopped green chilies.

Then add in 3 cans (14.5 ounce each) of cannellini beans (white kidney) that have been rinsed and drained, along with your chicken.

Finally add in a half teaspoon each of salt and white pepper. Bring the soup to a boil, reduce the heat and cook for about 10 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.


Skinny Winter White Cosmopolitans

Even though the holidays are over, and many people are trying to cut back on their alcohol consumption in the month of January, it still seems fitting to post this recipe for Skinny Winter White Cosmopolitans today because we are in the middle of a snow storm here in New England. The flakes are falling fast and furious, and this cocktail fits right in with the winter white theme!

In an earlier post I wrote about serving seasonal desserts when entertaining and I like this idea for cocktails too. How about a strawberry margarita in June, when fresh strawberries are at their peak a Pumpkin Spice White Russian as the first autumn leaves fall or a cold weather cocktail such as this Skinny Winter White Cosmopolitan, which reminds us of the stunning beauty of a winter white blanket of snow? These fun and festive drinks prompt us to appreciate the change of seasons and what better way to make cocktails more enjoyable than to experience a little gratitude!

Specialty cocktails are all the rage these days, and they can be quite pricey when ordered at bars and restaurants, but my main gripe with many of these drinks is that they are way too sweet and unnecessarily high in empty calories. Not only are many of the liqueurs used in these cocktails high in sugar, but they also usually contain simple syrup, which is nothing more than sugar and water heated together to form a syrup. So, essentially, these cocktails are sugar on top of sugar with some alcohol mixed in. Yuck! When you make your own specialty cocktails you can easily adjust the amount of sweetness/sugar, as I’ve done with these Skinny Winter White Cosmopolitans. The sweetness is tamped down by omitting simple syrup and diluting the white cranberry juice. To dilute the white cranberry juice simply mix it with an equal amount of water and use this as the base for the cocktail. If that’s still too sweet for you, mix 1/3 white cranberry juice with 2/3 water and use this instead.

Skinny Winter White Cosmopolitans clock in at about 138 calories per serving. Served icy cold, straight up or on the rocks, this festive and unique cocktail is great for winter parties. Be careful though – they go down very easy!

  • ¾ cup (6 ounces) cranberry vodka or plain vodka
  • ¾ cup (6 ounces) diluted white cranberry juice (see notes)
  • ¼ cup (2 ounces) Cointreau
  • ¼ cup (2 ounces) St. Germaine Elderflower Liqueur
  • ¼ cup (2 ounces) freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Ice
  • Sugared cranberries or frozen cranberries (see notes)
  • Fresh mint
  1. Stir together the vodka, diluted cranberry juice, Cointreau, St. Germaine Elderflower Liqueur, and lime juice in a small pitcher.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and pour in half the cocktail mixture. Shake well and pour into three martini glasses. Repeat with the remaining cocktail mixture.
  3. Garnish with sugared or frozen cranberries and fresh mint.

To make diluted white cranberry juice mix with an equal amount of water.

SUGARED CRANBERRIES
Combine ½ cup sugar and ½ cup water in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved, about 2-3 minutes. Stir in cranberries until well coated.
Working in batches, roll cranberries in remaining 1½ cups sugar until well coated let dry for at least 1 hour.
